Celebration of Sir Walter Bodmer’s 90th Birthday, April 14, 2026

Sir Walter Bodmer, who has been a member of the Fisher Memorial Trust committee since 1975 and Chairman from 1976 to 2021, was 90 on January 10, 2026.

In recognition of his long and outstanding service to the Trust, a celebratory symposium at Hertford College Oxford was organised by FMT committee member Ian Tomlinson, and took place on the afternoon of April 14, 2026. It was funded jointly by the FMT and the Department of Oncology, University of Oxford. The staff of Hertford College and the Department of Oncology provided excellent support, which ensured that everything went smoothly. The meeting was attended by approximately 60 people in addition to the speakers.

The speakers at the symposium (see the list below) were scientists and clinicians who have had strong associations with Sir Walter. They gave short talks on a wide range of topics, including both personal reminiscences and scientific findings in the areas to which he has contributed, with a strong emphasis on human genetics and cancer genetics. The symposium ended with a short talk by Sir Walter, reviewing his long career and giving some sage advice on how to succeed in research. I am sure that all who attended found it to be a memorable occasion.

The symposium was followed by a wine reception for all attendees, and a dinner in the Old Hall of Hertford College for the speakers, the FMT committee members present (Heather Battey, Walter Bodmer, Brian Charlesworth and Ian Tomlinson), and selected guests.
